Andy Lakatosh Team Spike

Below is some great news from longtime TSV member Andy Lakatosh about his recent signing with Team Spike.

It should also be noted that current Team Spike members Giddeon Massie and Becky Quinn also were former members of Tri-State Velo.

Somebody Pinch Me… I Must be Dreaming!

Hello all! It’s been a long time since I’ve had anything to post about on here, but that’s what 6 months off the bike will do to you! As most of you probably know, I caused a “little” bit of drama last year in T-town, and the result was USA Cycling granted me a 6 month vacation from racing free of charge! How lucky can a guy get! Just kidding. 2005 was a rough year all around for me. I had a lot of ups and downs but in the end I managed to take them all in stride. Looking back now, the effects were all positive as it has made me stronger a much stronger individual and has raised my desire to ride and race to a level it has never been at before! So as 2006 approached the road I was on was only going up! I didn’t think it could get any better. Until the day it got “the call”…

“The call”, would change my status as a cyclist forever. In the fall I received a call from Bill Ramsay, the director of the Cody Racing Team, based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado since 1984. He has a deep passion for track cycling and sprinting. He also owns a signage business called Cody Design.

What he said to me sounded like on big joke and it took a lot of “pinching” to convince me that I really wasn’t dreaming. He told me wild tales of a TRACK cycling team made just for SPRINTERS! Where the athletes would have all their expenses paid and all the necessary equipment provided to them by the best in industry. Travel and full support staff would be provided for all the major track races during the season. The team would have UCI Track status and be able to compete at world cups to earn spots for the World Championships! But then he told me the wildest and craziest part of it all! We were going to get PAID!!! For the first time in a long time, there was going to be a professional track team in the US. The craziest part of it all is he was asking me to be a rider on the team! It all seemed too good to be true.

As of January 1, 2006 I can confirm that dreams do come true! After enough pages of contracts to make my head spin, all the delicious details and dreams became reality as I arrived in Los Angeles in early January to find a new road bike, fully loaded from Raleigh. Complete Spike Team kits were waiting for us that consisted of both riding and casual attire. We got travel bike cases, duffle bags, backpacks and wheel bags all with our names on them. Along with our own personal sets of ZIPP track wheels. Oh and the team van is beyond belief. Oh and I totally forgot, so here’s the deal on the team. The team is called Spike. Spike is an energy pill from a company called Bio Test. They are a nutritional supplement company trying to move into the market of cycling. That’s where we come in. The team is nine athletes strong, 7 males and 2 females. We do have a bit of an endurance side to the team, 2 men and 1 woman. The riders are Giddeon Massie (T-town native), Ben Barczewski (T-town), Becky Quinn (T-town native), Stephen Alfred (California), Mike Blatchford (California), Jenny Reed (Washington), Ryan Lutrell (Colorado), Kevin Shur (Colorado), and myself of course.

So after spending about 3 weeks in California training with both the US National Sprint and Endurance Teams I am back in good old PA and working harder than ever to get ready for the 2006 domestic track season. I can tell already that this year is going to be the best yet for me, and probably the best in a long time for the US Track team! I hope to see all of you “Tri-Staters” at some of the spring criteriums and I will most definitely be at the velodrome this summer for all of the UCI events and hopefully some other regular Friday night races!

In closing I would just like to thank Ron Ruggiero and all of the members and sponsors of the Tri-State Velo club and racing team for all of the support I have received. I would not be where I am today with out the wonderful years I have spent with this great organization. I am proud to have been a member of such an outstanding club, team, and family that has always proven to be a force to be reckoned with in almost every race field and category. The red, white, and green of TSV will always be a part of me wherever I go.
