TSV Juniors Sweep PA Road Championships

Booey in Belgium

What a day for our Tri-State Juniors in their final race (as Juniors) at the Pennsylvania State Road Race Championships. Nick Roeder, Matt Waller and Booey Hottenstein won the Category 2, 4 and 3 races, respectively, with the "limitation" of Junior gearing, 52x14. Nick attacked the field with over 25 miles to the finish of his 92 mile race holding off a group of chasers nearly one minute back, while the field finished almost five minutes later. A tremendous effort for this very strong 17 year old rider against a very strong Cat 1,2,3 field on the relentlessly hilly 13 mile circuit under wet and treacherous conditions.

Matt Waller pulled his victory off with an attack in the final kilometer, managing to hold the field at bay with a mere bike-length advantage. A definite nail biter. Mr. Hottenstein enjoyed the cool, damp conditions today, reminiscent of his recent trip to Belgium, by taking the Cat 3 race with a tremendous sprint (à la Mark Cavendish) throwing his hands to the air with 25 meters to go despite the fact that the entire field was on his wheel.

Also noteworthy, Tom Schubert rode well to a 6th place finish in the Cat 3 race, as did Lee Sobotkin in the Cat 4. Nick Maimone experienced his first crash in a race on the slippery conditions and fortunately he and his bike are in good condition.
